How to Connect Speakers To Your Turntable

One of the first things you’ll need to know is how to connect your turntable to speakers. Don’t worry; we’ve got your back. In this beginner-friendly guide, we’ll walk you through the simple steps of physically connecting your turntable to your speakers. Let’s get started!

Before diving into the connection process, you’ll need;

  • Turntable
  • Speakers
  • Amplifier (A standalone amplifier is best, also known as a power amp, but any old hifi unit or CD player that has an AUX input will do)
  • Phono Amp (Your turntable may have one built in, and so might your amplifier, check first and if not you’ll need to buy one)
  • Speaker Cable (The cable that connects the power amp and turntable. This is usually two 3.5mm rca plugs that run out from the turntable)
  • Stripped Speaker Wires or Banana Plugs (Used to attach the power amp and speakers)

Step 1: Position Your Turntable, Power Amp, and Speakers.

Find an appropriate location for your turntable, power amp, and speakers. Make sure that they are within reach of each other, with ample space for the speaker cable to comfortably connect all components.

Step 2: Identify the Connections on Your Turntable.

Locate the output connections on your turntable. These are usually labelled “Speaker Outputs” or something similar. There are two connectors: one for the left channel (usually marked as “L” or “Left”) and another for the right channel (marked as “R” or “Right”).

Step 3: Connect the Turntable to the Power Amp/Phono Amp.

Usually these connectors will come in the form of two 3.5mm rca male connectors. It’s these that you need to plug into phono amp/amplifier. Remember, if you need to use a separate phono amp it goes Turntable -> Phono Amp -> Amplifier

Step 4: Connect the Power Amp to the Speakers.

Moving to your power amp, identify the speaker output connections. These are typically labeled as “Speaker Outputs” or something similar. You’ll find two sets of connectors: one for the left speaker and another for the right speaker. Choose the appropriate connections based on your setup.

Option 1: Stripped Wires:
If your power amp has binding posts loosen then the connectors by turning them counterclockwise. Insert the exposed copper wire from the speaker cable into the appropriate binding post for the left speaker, then tighten it by turning it clockwise. Repeat this process for the right speaker, ensuring a secure connection.

Option 2: Banana Plugs:
If your power amp has banana plug-compatible connectors, insert the banana plugs attached to the speaker cable directly into the corresponding connections for the left and right speakers. Ensure a snug fit to establish a secure connection.

Step 5: Double-Check the Connections.

Verify that all connections are secure, ensuring that the speaker cable is tightly connected to the turntable, power amp, and speakers. Loose connections can lead to audio issues or distortion so be extra careful here so as not to give yourself a headache later.

Step 8: Power On and Test.

Before turning everything on, make sure that the volume on your turntable, power amp, and speakers is set to a low level. Now power on your turntable, then your power amp and finally your speakers, if they’re active (if they plug into the mains). Gradually increase the volume to a comfortable listening level.

Congratulations! You’ve successfully connected your turntable to speakers using a power amp or phono amp, with the correct speaker cable and connectors. Now, sit back, relax, and savour the delightful analogue music experience. Happy listening!
