How To Use a Baerwald Alignment Protractor to Set Up Your Turntable’s Headshell
A vital component for getting set up correctly is accurately aligning the cartridge on the headshell. The cartridge holds the stylus which has to sit within the grooves in just the right way to achieve optimal sound. In this article, we will explore how to use a Baerwald Alignment Protractor, a widely recognised tool, to achieve correct alignment for your turntable setup.
Understanding Turntable Alignment
Turntable alignment refers to the correct positioning of the cartridge stylus within the grooves of the record. Proper alignment ensures that the stylus tracks the record accurately, minimising wear on the vinyl and maximising sound quality. The Baerwald Alignment Protractor is a specialised tool designed to assist with aligning the cartridge to industry-standard specifications.
Step 1: Gather the necessary tools
Before diving into the alignment process, gather the following:
- Baerwald Alignment Protractor: Available from our store.
- Screwdriver: The cartridge will be attached to the headshell with either allan bolts or screws. Use a small screwdriver or allan key to adjust the cartridge position on the headshell.
- Level: A small bubble level (also available in our store) can help ensure your turntable is perfectly level during the alignment process.
Step 2: Preparing the turntable
Ensure your turntable is set up correctly by following these steps:
- Place your turntable on a stable, level surface. This step is crucial, as any tilting or unevenness can affect the accuracy of the alignment.
- Remove any protective covers and ensure the platter is securely in place.
- Balance the tonearm: Consult your turntable’s manual for instructions on balancing the tonearm. Proper tonearm balance allows the cartridge to exert consistent pressure on the stylus while minimising excessive wear.
Step 3: Understanding the Baerwald Alignment Protractor
The Baerwald Alignment Protractor is a visual template that assists in aligning the cartridge. It features a series of gridlines and reference points that correspond to different cartridge mounting distances and overhangs. The protractor is typically placed on the turntable platter, beneath the record, during the alignment process. The goal is for the cartridge/headshell to line up perfectly with BOTH reference points on the protractor. Keep adjusting until it does. Here’s how.
Step 4: Placing the Baerwald Alignment Protractor
Follow these steps to position the Baerwald Alignment Protractor correctly:
- Start by removing the platter mat, if present, from your turntable.
- Place the protractor on the turntable platter with its center spindle hole aligned with the turntable’s spindle.
- Carefully position the protractor so that it fits snugly against the platter spindle while aligning the reference points with the gridlines on the protractor.
Step 5: Aligning the cartridge
Now that the protractor is in place, it’s time to align the cartridge accurately:
- With the protractor in position, gently place the tonearm’s stylus on the protractor’s first alignment point, usually labeled “null point” or “gridline.”
- Use the screwdriver/allan key to carefully adjust the cartridge position on the headshell, ensuring the stylus remains on the gridline. The cartridge should now be pointed directly at the null point and level to the gridlines.
- Now move the tonearm so that the stylus is nearer to the second mark. If the stylus already lines up perfectly to this second marker then you’re done! Congrats. That’s a little unusual though, so you’ll probably find that a little adjustment is required. To achieve the correct position, move the cartridge in the headshell back and forth in small increments until the stylus aligns with the higher point. Once it is aligned move the the tonearm down and check that the stylus still lines up with the first marker point. Repeat until you find the sweet spot.
- Once you have achieved proper alignment, tighten the cartridge screws securely but without excessive force.
Step 6: Verifying the alignment
After adjusting the cartridge, it is crucial to verify the alignment:
- Remove the Baerwald Alignment Protractor from the turntable platter.
- Place a test record on the turntable and play a track.
- Listen carefully to the audio quality, paying attention to tracking errors, distortion, or mistracking.
- If you notice any issues, consider revisiting the alignment process to make slight adjustments until optimal sound quality is achieved.
Utilising a Baerwald Alignment Protractor simplifies this process by providing a reliable reference point for aligning the cartridge with industry-standard specifications. By following the steps outlined in this guide, you can ensure precise alignment and enjoy the full potential of your vinyl listening experience.
