If the stylus force is too high then this results in shortened record/stylus life as the needle digs in to your records, while too low stylus force results in poor audio performance and mistracking, which itself can damage both the stylus and the record’s delicate playing surface.

But you can prevent all of that by using these scales to help you correctly dial in exactly the right amount of vertical tracking force on your tonearm.

All cartridges have a specific recommended level of tracking force for optimum performance. You can find information on their recommended settings in their accompanying guides, or online from the manufacturers.
