How to Use a Baerwald Alignment Protractor

If you've ever bought a new cartridge or stylus and just eyeballed the fitting before dropping the needle, you're leaving a fair bit of performance on the table. Proper cartridge alignment is one of those jobs that looks fiddly at first but makes a genuinely audible difference once you've done it right. Less distortion, better tracking, and a longer life for both your stylus and your records.

The Baerwald protractor (sometimes called the Löfgren A or "IEC" alignment, depending on who you ask) is the most common alignment standard you'll come across, and for good reason. It offers a really sensible compromise across the whole width of the record, minimising tracking error from the outer groove right through to the innermost tracks. So let's walk through how to actually use one.

What You'll Need

  • A Baerwald alignment protractor
  • A small screwdriver, usually a Phillips or flat head depending on your headshell
  • A magnifying glass or loupe, this makes a massive difference to accuracy
  • Good lighting, ideally a small desk lamp you can angle right over the cartridge
  • A bit of patience, because you'll probably need a few passes to get it spot on

Step 1: Understand What You're Actually Aligning

Before you touch anything, it helps to know what the protractor is checking. There are two things being adjusted at once:

Overhang – this is how far forward or back the cartridge sits in the headshell, which determines where the stylus tip sits relative to the spindle.

Zenith angle – this is the rotational twist of the cartridge body, which determines whether the cantilever is pointing at the correct angle relative to the groove.

The Baerwald protractor has two null points marked on it, usually somewhere around 66mm and 120mm from the spindle depending on your specific arm's geometry. At these two points, tracking error is zero. Everywhere else on the record there's a small amount of error, but it's spread out so evenly that you get the best overall performance across the whole side.

Step 2: Mount the Protractor

Most protractors have a hole or a set of concentric circles in the middle. Slip this over your turntable's spindle so it sits flat and doesn't wobble. If your protractor doesn't have a spindle hole and instead uses two dots or a two point mirror system, you'll need to line those dots up manually with the arm's pivot point, which should be marked in your protractor's instructions.

Take your time here. If the protractor isn't sitting square and flat, everything you do afterwards will be slightly off.

Step 3: Loosen the Cartridge

Loosen the two mounting screws holding your cartridge into the headshell, just enough that you can slide it forward, back, and rotate it slightly. Don't take the screws all the way out, you don't want the cartridge flopping around or, worse, falling off the headshell wires.

Step 4: Line Up the Stylus at the First Null Point

Lower the arm (with the power off) so the stylus tip sits directly over the first null point grid on the protractor, usually the one closer to the spindle. Most protractors have a small grid pattern here to help you check both overhang and zenith at once.

You're looking for two things simultaneously:

  1. The stylus tip sits exactly on the marked point
  2. The sides of the cartridge body line up parallel with the grid lines printed on the protractor

This is genuinely fiddly with just your eyes, which is why the magnifying glass earns its keep. Get as close as you reasonably can.

Step 5: Check the Second Null Point

Slide the arm out to the second null point and check the same two things again. Chances are it won't be perfect on your first attempt, because adjusting overhang affects zenith and vice versa.

This is the annoying but unavoidable part. Go back and forth between the two null points, making small adjustments each time, until both points are as close to correct as you can get them. You're aiming for a good compromise between the two rather than a perfect result at one and a poor one at the other.

Step 6: Tighten the Screws (Carefully)

Once you're happy, gently snug up the mounting screws while keeping an eye on the stylus position, since it can shift slightly as you tighten. Don't overtighten, just enough to hold everything firmly in place. Recheck both null points one more time after tightening, because it's common for things to move a touch in this final step.

Step 7: Set Your Tracking Force and Anti Skate

Alignment is only one part of the setup. Once the cartridge is positioned correctly, make sure you also set:

  • Tracking force, using your arm's counterweight and a stylus force gauge, set to the manufacturer's recommended value
  • Anti skate, usually matched to the tracking force setting
  • Azimuth, checking that the cantilever sits perfectly vertical when viewed from the front

All of these work together with your alignment to get the best possible sound and the least wear on your records.

A Few Practical Tips

  • Do this job in good light and don't rush it, a proper alignment session usually takes 20 to 30 minutes if you're being thorough
  • If your protractor has a mirrored surface, use it to check you're viewing the stylus straight on and not at an angle, which throws off your perception of alignment
  • Small, incremental adjustments work far better than big sweeping changes
  • If you're not confident freehand, a few protractor designs clamp or peg to the spindle more securely, which can help steady your hands

Is Baerwald Right for You?

Baerwald is a great all rounder and the standard most cartridge manufacturers design around, but it's not the only alignment method out there. Löfgren B and Stevenson alignments shift the balance of where tracking error is minimised across the record, which some listeners prefer depending on their listening habits. If you mostly listen to the outer sections of records, or you're chasing the last percentage of accuracy, it might be worth reading into the alternatives. For the vast majority of listeners though, Baerwald is a sensible, well tested default that will serve you well.

Getting your alignment right is one of those setup jobs that costs you nothing but a bit of time, yet pays off every single time you drop the needle. Worth doing properly.
