How To Use an Azimuth Block to Set Up Your Stylus

If you've read up on azimuth before, you've probably come across the mirror method, where you eyeball the cantilever against its own reflection. It works, but it relies a lot on your eyes and a steady hand. An azimuth block tool takes a lot of the guesswork out of it by giving you a proper physical reference to work against, rather than trying to judge a straight line by sight alone. Here's how to actually use one.

 

What an Azimuth Block Tool Actually Is

An azimuth block is a small, precisely machined block, usually metal or hard plastic, with a perfectly flat top surface and often a right angle edge or a small vertical face built in. Some come with a built in bubble level, others are designed to be used alongside a separate small level. The idea is simple, it gives you a genuinely flat, true reference surface to compare your cartridge and headshell against, instead of relying on your eyes to judge "straight" freehand.

Some versions are designed to sit directly on the platter, others clip or rest against the headshell itself. Check your specific tool's instructions since designs do vary a fair bit between manufacturers.

 

What You'll Need

  • Your azimuth block tool
  • A small spirit level, if one isn't built into the block
  • A small screwdriver for your azimuth or headshell adjustment
  • Good lighting
  • A record or spare disc to lower the stylus onto safely if your tool requires it

 

Step 1: Get Your Turntable Level First

This step gets skipped more than it should. An azimuth block is only useful if the turntable itself is sitting level, otherwise you're just aligning the cartridge to a tilted reference and introducing a new error instead of fixing one.

Use a small spirit level on the plinth itself, checking both front to back and side to side, and adjust your turntable's feet until it's properly level. This is worth doing before any azimuth work, not just for this step but for your whole setup in general.

Step 2: Position the Block

With the turntable powered off, place the azimuth block either on the platter itself or against the headshell, depending on your specific tool's design. If it's a platter mounted block, it usually sits directly beneath where the cartridge will rest, giving you a flat vertical face to compare the cartridge body against.

Make sure the block itself is sitting flat and stable before you go any further, a wobbly reference is worse than no reference at all.

Step 3: Compare the Cartridge Against the Block

Lower the tonearm gently so the stylus is at a normal playing position, then look at the cartridge body or headshell from directly in front, comparing its vertical edges against the flat face of the block. You're looking for the cartridge to sit perfectly parallel to the block's reference surface, with no lean to either side.

Some blocks include fine markings or a grid to make this comparison more precise than judging by eye alone, which is a big part of why these tools are worth using over the mirror method if you want more repeatable results.

If your block has a built in bubble level, this is where it earns its keep too, since some designs let you rest it directly on top of the cartridge or headshell to give you a numeric, level based reading rather than a purely visual one.

Step 4: Make Your Adjustment

Depending on your tonearm, this usually means loosening a locking collar or grub screw that allows the arm tube to rotate slightly, or using a dedicated azimuth adjustment dial if your arm has one. Make a small adjustment, then recheck against the block.

Small movements matter a lot here, azimuth is a fine adjustment and it's easy to overcorrect if you're making big changes each time. Go slowly, tightening and rechecking, rather than trying to nail it in one go.

Step 5: Recheck From Multiple Angles

Once you think you've got it, check the alignment again, ideally from slightly different viewing positions rather than just straight on, since a single viewing angle can sometimes hide a small residual lean. If your block has a level function, use it as your final confirmation rather than relying purely on the visual check.

Step 6: Confirm With a Test Record if You Have One

An azimuth block gets you a very accurate mechanical alignment, but if you want to double check the result by ear, a test record with a channel balance track is a great final step. Play the test tone and listen for equal volume and clarity across both channels. If something still sounds off despite a seemingly perfect block alignment, it's worth rechecking your cartridge itself for any internal manufacturing tilt, which does occasionally happen and can't be fully corrected by azimuth adjustment alone.

 

Why Bother With a Block Over the Mirror Method

The mirror method is perfectly valid and plenty of people get great results with it, but it does rely entirely on your own eyes judging a reflection, which introduces a bit of natural variability. A properly made azimuth block gives you a fixed, repeatable reference every time, which is especially useful if you're swapping cartridges regularly, doing this professionally, or just want a bit more confidence in your result. It's not that one is right and one is wrong, it's more that a block tool takes some of the subjectivity out of a step that genuinely benefits from precision.

 

A Few Practical Notes

  • Always level your turntable itself before trusting any azimuth reading, block or otherwise
  • Small, incremental adjustments beat big sweeping changes every time
  • Recheck azimuth if you later adjust tracking force, overhang, or swap your cartridge
  • A block tool is a great investment if you're setting up cartridges often, but even an occasional user will benefit from the improved accuracy over judging things freehand

Getting azimuth right is a small step that a lot of people skip, but it rewards the bit of extra care with genuinely better channel balance and clarity. An azimuth block just makes getting there a lot less fiddly.
