Moving Magnet vs Moving Coil Cartridges

If you've been shopping for a new cartridge, you've probably come across the terms moving magnet and moving coil, usually shortened to MM and MC. They're often talked about as a straightforward budget versus premium split, but there's actually a proper technical difference underneath that, and understanding it helps explain why the two types sound and behave differently, and why they come with such different price tags and setup considerations.

 

How a Cartridge Actually Generates Sound

Before getting into the difference, it helps to remember what a cartridge is actually doing. As the stylus tracks the groove, it physically moves in response to the tiny variations cut into the vinyl. That movement needs to be converted into an electrical signal, which your phono preamp then boosts and shapes into something your amplifier and speakers can use.

Both MM and MC cartridges do this using the same basic principle, a magnet and a coil of wire moving relative to each other generates a small electrical current. The difference comes down to which of those two parts is actually the one doing the moving.

 

Moving Magnet Cartridges

In a moving magnet design, tiny magnets are attached to the end of the cantilever, the little rod that holds the stylus, while the coils of wire stay fixed in place inside the cartridge body. As the stylus moves in response to the groove, the attached magnets move too, and that movement past the stationary coils is what generates the electrical signal.

This is the more common design, especially at the budget to mid range end of the market, for a few good reasons. The moving parts are lighter and simpler to manufacture, which keeps costs down. MM cartridges also tend to produce a higher output signal, which means they work with the standard phono input built into most amps and receivers without needing anything extra.

Another practical benefit is that most MM cartridges have a genuinely user replaceable stylus. Since the delicate coil winding stays fixed inside the cartridge body, the stylus and cantilever assembly can usually just be unclipped and swapped out when it wears, without needing to send the whole cartridge away or replace the entire unit.

 

Moving Coil Cartridges

A moving coil design flips this around. Here, the tiny coils of wire are attached to the cantilever and move with the stylus, while fixed magnets stay stationary inside the cartridge body.

This has some real sonic advantages. Because the coils can be made incredibly light and precise, moving coil cartridges are often capable of tracking finer detail in the groove, which a lot of listeners describe as more accurate, more detailed, or more natural sounding, particularly with instrumental texture and subtle dynamics.

The trade off is cost and practicality. Moving coil cartridges are more complex and labour intensive to build, which is reflected in their price, often significantly higher than a comparable MM cartridge. They also typically produce a much lower output signal, which means they usually need either a dedicated MC phono stage or a step up transformer to boost the signal enough before it reaches a standard phono input. And critically, the stylus usually isn't separately replaceable, since the coils are so tightly integrated into the cantilever assembly that when the stylus wears out, the entire cartridge generally needs replacing rather than just the tip.

Which One Should You Actually Get?

For most people starting out or running a fairly standard setup, moving magnet is the sensible choice. It's more affordable, easier to live with day to day, works with the phono input most amps already have built in, and when the stylus eventually wears out, replacing just the stylus rather than the whole cartridge is a lot easier on the wallet.

Moving coil makes more sense once you're running a higher end system where the improvement in detail and accuracy is actually going to be audible, and where you're prepared for the extra cost, both of the cartridge itself and potentially a dedicated phono stage to properly support it. It's very much a case of diminishing returns unless the rest of your system, your turntable, phono stage, amp, and speakers, are good enough to actually reveal that extra detail in the first place.

Neither one is objectively better, they're just built around different priorities. MM favours practicality, affordability, and ease of maintenance, MC favours ultimate performance for those willing to pay for it and build a system around getting the most out of it.
